How Is a Birth Chart Calculated? (Free Calculator)

To calculate a birth chart you need three things: your birth date, birth time and birth place. Together these fix the sky’s position and your chart.

What information is needed?

Why does birth time matter so much?

Your rising sign rests entirely on your birth time. If the time is wrong, your ascendant and all house placements shift and the chart stops being truly yours. Use the most exact time you can find.

How the calculation works

Modern calculation combines astronomical ephemeris data (where every planet is at each moment) with your birthplace coordinates and the historical time zone, then draws the houses with a house system (e.g. Placidus). It can be done by hand, but the fast, error-free way is digital.

What if I don’t know my birth time?

A birth certificate or family record is usually enough. If the time is unknown, a noon (12:00) chart gives a good approximation — the Sun and most planets are correct; only the rising sign and houses remain uncertain.
