What Is a Indian Dasha? The Planetary Periods of Your Life

One of the clearest differences between Indian (Jyotish) and Western astrology is its powerful timing system: the Vimshottari dasha. A dasha shows which planet “rules” a given period of your life.

How does it work?

The nakshatra (lunar mansion) occupied by the Moon at your birth determines which planet’s period you start with. Across a 120-year cycle, nine planets rule in turn: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Each has a different length (e.g., Venus 20 years, Sun 6).

Mahadasha and antardasha

The main period is the mahadasha, and the sub-periods within it are antardasha. Major events are often triggered at antardasha transitions, so the two are read together for timing.

Why does it matter?

The same birth chart yields very different experiences in different dasha periods. A dasha helps you understand when themes like a career change, marriage, relocation or a spiritual opening are likely to come forward.
